Grim Lovelies - Release Date - 2/10/2018 "A gripping fantasy from bestseller Megan Shepherd--How far would you go to hold onto the only life you’ve ever known, even when it’s far from a fairytale?" Lets start with the cover, because how stunning is that?! If you add an 'Instagram' filter to it, the letters show they have depth to them, much like the book. The addition of the Gargoyle and the Eiffel Tower is also a nice touch as they are themed within the book, as well as the fact that the book takes place in Paris.
This book runs on the idea of Cinderella and midnight with a twist. This story focusses on animals that have been magically transformed from animals known as 'beasties' in to humans, the stories theme of midnight stems from their mistress - who cast the enchantment - is murdered and they have to find a way to ensure that they don't return to their original forms before the time runs out. I really enjoyed the theme of this book and the way that it was written, as the author has a way of building a world and suspense within the story line. I enjoyed the characters and the 'baddies' as they had depth to them as well as just plainly being written wonderfully. I always relish when an author takes a theme from a fairy tale and makes it their own original story, and I am extremely glad that I was able to read it this early on in the year. "Enchanted from an animal, Anouk’s human form is tied to her mistress’ dark magic, and she has never stepped outside of Mada Vittoria’s Parisian townhouse. But when her mistress is murdered, Anouk and her fellow beasties only have three days before the spell fades and they turn back into animals forever. In a desperate attempt to save themselves, Anouk and the others venture into the outside world and discover a well-kept secret: beasties can do much more than sweep floors and hang up coats. They exist for a far deadlier reason, and now every magic handler in the city is after them." Advanced Reader Copy sent to me in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley.
