Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young - Release date 24/04/2018 Spoiler free review "OND ELDR. BREATHE FIRE. Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient rivalry against the Riki clan. Her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield—her brother, fighting with the enemy—the brother she watched die five years ago." I never expected to be attached to a story as much as I was with this, I have always appreciated the Nordic culture and the stories that they bring from peoples imaginations. This book was heavily inspired by the lifestyle of Norsemen and their beliefs of different gods, and the reasons that they went in to war - opposing gods and goddesses and how their machinations affect their worshippers.
I have seen a couple of bad reviews about this book, but I feel that they didn't fully give the book a chance when they did read it. I give this a 5* review as it made me cry, feel anxious over the characters, it was blood thirsty and the battles were well written and gorily entertaining in parts. The author described the helplessness of a character who has been captured as well as their angry emotions when they are taken as a slave and prevented from escaping. It has the brutality of the Norsemen and the idealistic views of the Vikings and how they lived and behaved. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I connected with it very unexpectedly, it took me around 4 hours to read as I did end up doing other things whilst reading it to give my eyes a break! I highly recommend this standalone book as it is just magnificent in my opinion.
